Wet. Water.

Conceptually, children were wonderful little mini-shifters who spread sunshine and butterflies simply because they existed. Realistically, they were the devil’s creatures sent to Earth to destroy Maya’s sanity. And her ice cream stash.

Alex—Holder of the Peen—demanded she be dragged off to parts unknown in order to save her frozen box of goodness. Well, partially unknown. They’d only traveled two hours from their home in Ridgeville. Two endless, screaming, deafness-inducing hours.

And now they’d arrived! High five! Not.

“Alex?” Maya tried really hard not to ogle her mate’s ass as he bent over and dug in their cooler. Well, one of their four coolers. Her twins ate a lot.

“Yeah, babe?” He didn’t raise his head or even glance in her direction. Nice.

“I’m really thinking this is a bad idea.” She glanced around the area they’d commandeered as their “base of operations” and another knot invaded her belly.

Some of her favorite people were scattered throughout the place, a massive overhang shading picnic table after picnic table. It’d be a great location to relax and recover after… their canoe trip.

A canoe. That went in water. Wet. Water.

The cubs, kits, and pups ran in circles, snaking their way between adults’ legs and kicking up moist dirt with every rapid step. They were excited. They couldn’t wait to get into a canoe. That went in the water. Wet. Water.

“What are you talking about?” He lifted his head and turned his attention to her. Excitement covered his features, his smile matching his sons’.

“It’s just…” Maya looked past him to the river that contained water. Wet. Water. Did no one else recall that most of their pride was made of lions? Was she the only one that had a clue? “You know, we’re cats and—”

Alex stood tall, grinning as he approached her with his loose stride. “What’s got you scared, baby?”

He wrapped his arms around her waist and tugged her close until their bodies were aligned, shoulder to hip. After all the years they’d been together, through the oh my fuck pain of childbirth and the constant stress of life, he still got her hot. One touch, one look, and her motors revved like there was no tomorrow.

“I really don’t wanna get into a canoe.” She didn’t care that she was whining like the twins.

“Aw…” He hugged her a little harder and then… Smack. He popped her on her ass.

She let out a very queenly squeak and he chuckled. Bastard.

“Too bad, baby. Our team lost Pictionary last night. That means we float down this damned river with everyone’s kids while they snack.”

She glared, he kept smiling, she glared some more. “It’s your fault. You went and got the cubs art lessons. Art.”

Another smack, the hint of pain spreading through her, and a shiver went down her spine. “Alex—”

“Oh God.” Easton’s voice was filled with disgust. “Aunt Maddy, they’re getting stinky again!”

Glare still in place, she turned her icy stare on her son. “You are not too old to kill and there’s plenty of forest to dump your body. Don’t think I won’t.
